Eric Trump was one who sneered at the pandemic in late Spring, and said media attention to it was no more than a Democratic Party campaign ploy.  As reported in Forbes (a respected, business-oriented journal):

During an interview with Fox News host Jeanine Pirro on “Justice with Judge Jeanine,” Eric Trump, the son of President Donald Trump said, “And guess what, after November 3 coronavirus will magically all of a sudden go away and disappear and everybody will be able to reopen.”

The following tweet includes a video of this segment: [ text: “Biden loves this,” @EricTrump says, talking about agonizing shutdowns during the pandemic… “They’ll milk it every single day between now and Nov. 3, and guess what. . .”

He repeated the talking point in a TIME report: “They think they’re taking away Donald Trump’s greatest tool, which is being able to go into an arena and fill it with 50,000 people every single time…,” Trump said. “And you watch, they’ll milk it every single day between now and Nov. 3. And guess what, after Nov. 3 coronavirus will magically, all of a sudden, go away and disappear and everybody will be able to reopen.”

Trump added in the TIME report that that Vice President Biden “loves this” because [Biden] is not able to draw comparable crowds to his campaign events. He said that Democrats are trying to take away the President’s “greatest asset”— his ability to connect with the American people, and appear at campaign rallies.

Well, I’m writing this late on Monday, November 9, 2020. The election is almost a week behind us, except for some sore-loser flailing by Eric Trump’s father.

And now President-Elect Biden has put in his first full day of work on the transition. And Item Number One on his list was — the creation of a coronavirus action council, to get a jump on tackling the resurgent pandemic.

Also this afternoon, Biden spoke with Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau about — establishing an international cooperative effort against the virus.

These actions took place against the backdrop of a renewed, record-breaking surge in virus infections, especially in the U. S.  Whatever some may think of as their political implications, these were exactly the kind of steps a new national leadership would take if they were really serious about the virus.

Further, contrary to Eric Trump’s jibes, both these efforts — and the virus– are receiving plentiful post-election media attention. For instance, the Drudge Report on Monday night ran headline links to no less than 18 different stories about the virus on its one webpage.

The day’s late news includes the disclosures that over this weekend, White House chief of Staff Mark Meadows was diagnosed with the virus, as was HUD Secretary Ben Carson, and White house lawyer David Bossie.

So, what many, including me, dubbed the Superspreader re-election Campaign, with its frenzied succession of maskless , heedless rallies, capped by a crowded election night watch party in the White House, keeps reaping what it has been sowing so promiscuously.

And the foolish jibes of such as Eric Trump look sadder and more self-destructive every day.

I hope these latest victims recover. And with recovery I hope they, along with Eric Trump, get the message from inside that it’s time to move on, and get out of history’s way.
