Comfort Food

Eastern North Carolina – 2007

The large sign in the lawn in front of the old red brick building read:

“U.S. MARINE CORPS, CAMP ELIZABETH BRIG.

NO PHOTOGRAPHS ALLOWED.”

I stopped the car right in front of it, rolled down the window, slipped the digital camera from my pocket and took a couple of quick pictures.

I hoped they’d also show the razor wire coiled along the edges of the tall fence around one end of the building. A few of the blades flashed in the late winter sunlight, the only bright color in the scene. Continue reading More Resistance Vacation Reading: Comfort Food – A Story

Tom Fox – Quaker Peaceworker Murdered in Iraq March 10, 2006

March 10: Remember Tom Fox

March 10 — how could I forget? How dare I fail to remember?

Nineteen years and four months ago, John Stephens and I began a blog site called freethecaptivesnow.org , as both a personal vigil and a community service, compiling and posting nightly updates of reports — or mostly the lack of reports — about the fate of four peaceworkers kidnapped in Iraq. They had been taken in Baghdad, and one of them, Tom Fox, was a Quaker and a friend of both John and me.

A Shadow on the Daffodils: Preaching from the Big Book of Nobody

Daffs, going wild again.

This past First Day (Quaker talk for Sunday) I Zoomed into worship in my Friends meeting, the one out in the farmland of Flyover County, North By-God Carolina, where I missed one of my favorite annual scenes there: the appearance in the back 40 of a big unruly spread of wild daffodils. But I did hear a stirring message.

No one among the elders knows when or by whom the daffodils came. Their location, out behind the community building we fondly call The Hut, isn’t visible from the road, so passersby mostly miss the spread, too bad for them. Quakers Quitting on QUIT: Torture Wins, this time. And maybe next time, too.

I wish it wasn’t time to write this post.

But it is: Quakers are quitting on QUIT.

QUIT is — or rather was — the Quaker Initiative to end Torture. It began in the spring of 2005, with a call by Friend John Calvi,  just as the international scope, the vast evil plus the flagrant criminality of the U. S.  “War on Terror” torture  program — all this was becoming shockingly clear.

As detailed below, QUIT formally ended this week, on July 15, 2024.

Nineteen years.

We worked hard, we did stuff. We joined with others.  But in my view, we failed. At our most active and diligent, we didn’t really lay a glove on our three main targets.

Those targets were:

Yikes! The Next President could be A Gitmo Torture-Meister & Human Rights Shredder

[NOTES: I protested Gitmo and the U. S. torture program for years during the Iraqi-stan wars. There were a number of names from that horrible and still unaddressed period: Rumsfeld, Cheney (Dick, tho Liz agrees) W and more.

Now there’s another one: a newbie Navy lawyer, aggressive, all-in, ambitious. Also unknown.

But not unknown anymore: Ron DeSantis.

This Washington Post deep-dive fills in his record as a key cog in the Gitmo machinery, and later, in Congress, a staunch defender of all that it represents. (He is now a presidential aspirant who is, among other things, completely ignoring questions from the Post.) the piece shows that he could truly add a new campaign cap to his growing collections, beyond “Don’t Say Gay” and, “Up Yours, Mickey!” With  this new boast: “Proud Vet of Gitmo: Where Human & Constitutional Rights (Still) Go To Die.”

We just thought you ought to know.

DeSantis’s pivotal service at Guantánamo during a violent year

Washington Post — March 21, 2023

‘Hey, you can actually force-feed,’ Ron DeSantis said he advised, endorsing a practice detainee lawyers described as torture

Ron DeSantis was a 27-year-old Navy lawyer fresh out of Harvard Law School when he arrived in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, amid an escalating crisis at the U.S. military base.
